Did you know children should visit their dentist every six months for preventive exams like their parents? Caring for your child's teeth and visiting their dentist regularly should be as important as scheduling their well-check with their pediatrician.

This is because pediatric dentistry sets them up for future smile success and allows the dentist to begin monitoring their oral development. Thus, you're aware of any concerns as early as possible when they're easier to treat.

There are also several steps you can take at home to promote excellent oral health. Here's what you should know.

Helpful Oral Health Tips for Parents

Parents play an integral role in developing their child's oral health habits, and it starts early.

You can begin caring for your child's smile during infancy by wiping their gums gently with a warm washcloth after feedings. Start brushing baby teeth when they arrive with a small, soft brush for infants. You can also use toothpaste that's safe to swallow to get them used to brushing their teeth.

Like their parents, older kids should brush twice a day and floss once, and they will likely need your assistance until they are around seven or eight years old.

Other suggestions for caring for your little one's smile are:

  • Choose the right tools—Get them involved in choosing a toothbrush or their favorite toothpaste flavor. This will get them excited about brushing their teeth.
  • Teach proper techniques — Show your child the right way to brush and floss their teeth, lead by example, and let them watch you.
  • Encourage healthy eating habits — Monitor your little one's sugar intake. Encourage them to eat nutritious foods and provide fruits and veggies for snacks instead of chips, cookies, or crackers.
