Our goal is to help your child learn that visiting the dentist is a good thing, an attitude that will serve them long into adulthood.

Dental care is just as crucial for small smiles as it is for adults. The American Dental Associate recommends establishing a dental home for your child by age one. This may seem early, but there’s actually quite a lot we can do at this young age to influence their oral development and set them on a path to a problem-free smile.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

We know that your child’s first dental visit may seem a little overwhelming to you. Rest assured, Dr. Unti and our dental team have decades of experience providing dental care to children of all ages in Palatine. We’re also parents and grandparents who understand that each child has a unique personality.

We’ll help your little one get used to the new experience by giving them a ride in the dental chair, counting their teeth, and showing them how some of our equipment works. A stress-free first visit sets the stage for a healthy, positive attitude about dental visits.

Preventive Dental Exams and Cleanings in Palatine

It’s essential for children to begin having routine dental exams and cleanings as soon as the first baby teeth appear. These teeth are temporary, but they play a crucial role in your child’s dental development.

Baby teeth help your child learn how to speak and chew solid foods and also hold a space in their mouth for permanent teeth to emerge correctly. We need to address tooth decay right away with a filling so that the baby tooth stays intact until it’s ready to come out on its own.

We Support You in Caring for Your Child’s Smile

As a parent, you also play a significant role in managing your child’s oral health, so we’ll show you how to brush and floss their teeth correctly at home. Our children’s dentist in Palatine is more than happy to address any concerns you have. We’ll also provide nutritional guidance and answer your questions about oral habits like bottle feeding, thumb sucking, and pacifier use.

Dental Care as Your Child Grows

Dr. Unti will continue to perform dental exams and teeth cleanings every six months as your child grows. He will provide age-appropriate care at every stage of their development, including fillings, periodontal treatment, and preventive treatments like fluoride applications and dental sealants. As your child becomes more active, we recommend a customized mouth guard to protect their teeth from damage during sports activities

Around age seven, we’ll recommend an orthodontic evaluation at our Palatine dental office to see if we need to take steps to ensure that permanent teeth erupt correctly. Don’t worry—this doesn’t necessarily mean your child needs braces; but if they do, Dr. Unti has also had advanced training in orthodontics and can provide the appropriate treatment for your child.
