February is National Children’s Dental Health month, and our children’s dentist in Palatine wants you to celebrate with us! This public health event is a month-long celebration to raise awareness of the importance of dental care and oral hygiene in children. This year’s theme is “Brush, Floss, Smile!”

Dr. Unti, our Palatine dentist, is always available for guidance and tips regarding excellent oral health and hygiene for kids and teens.

In the meantime, look at the following to learn more about how to keep your kid’s smile healthy and beautiful.

Brush, Floss, Smile!

The American Dental Association started National Children’s Dental Health month to encourage families, parents, caregivers, teachers, and kids to learn more about proper oral hygiene and good dental health. Brushing and flossing are vital to your child’s oral and general health, not to mention it helps them keep their smiles beautiful and clean! To help, the ADA put together some fun and informative games and activities you can share with your kids or students. Head to their website and download all their free educational tools, like crossword puzzles, calendars, and coloring sheets.

How Should Kids Clean Their Teeth?

Brushing and flossing small teeth is just as important as brushing and flossing adult teeth. Developing the proper technique can keep plaque, tartar, and bacteria at bay and prevent problems like cavities and gum disease. Your children’s dentist in Palatine can help demonstrate the proper techniques based on your child’s age, and we can show you how to make oral hygiene at home fun!

Proper Brushing

Children and adults should brush twice daily. We recommend the following:

  • Angle the toothbrush at 45 degrees.
  • Gently scrub your teeth in small circles.
  • Brush all tooth surfaces.
  • Brush the tongue from back to front.
  • Brush for two minutes. You can even play your favorite song and brush for the duration!

Proper Flossing

Kids should floss once a day, just like adults. When your child has two teeth touching each other, they should floss––or you should do it for them. Flossing gently between teeth removes plaque and tartar where your brush can’t reach. You can try string floss, threaders, or floss picks.

Schedule Your Child’s Routine Dental Visit

Yes, brushing and flossing are vital for growing smiles, but having routine visits to the dentist is too. Regular exams and cleanings ensure your youngster’s smile stays healthy and problem-free!
