Electric vs. Manual Toothbrushes: Which One Is Right for You?

Today, we're going to tackle a common question we hear from patients: Which is better, an electric or manual toothbrush?

The answer to that question varies for each patient because each has unique needs. However, the truth is, you can get great results from either type of toothbrush if you're willing to put in the effort. Here's what you should know.

How Does an Electric Toothbrush Work?

Most high-end electric toothbrushes are charged. The brush is typically programmed to alert you when you press too hard or brush too vigorously, helping protect your soft gum tissues from damage. The brush also has a timer that alerts you every 30 seconds that it's time to switch quadrants. This ensures that you're brushing for a full two minutes and giving each quadrant of your mouth the attention it needs.

Essentially, an electric toothbrush does a great job with minimal effort on your part, which many patients appreciate. A manual toothbrush can deliver fantastic results, but you have to use proper brushing techniques for it to be effective.

Proper Manual Brushing Technique

If you choose a regular manual toothbrush, always select one with soft bristles. Make sure it's the right size for your mouth.

Angle your toothbrush about 45 degrees to the tooth and gently brush in circular motions close to the gumline, being careful not to irritate the gumline. Then sweep away any debris from the gumline and off the tooth. Repeat this for two minutes, gently moving around your entire mouth. Don't forget to brush your tongue and rinse your mouth and toothbrush thoroughly afterward.

Following these guidelines can help you achieve great results with a manual toothbrush.
