What are the symptoms of TMJ disorder?
TMJ Dysfunction is often obvious because the patient suffers from
clicking or popping jaw joints, pain in or around the jaw joints,
locking of the jaw, or limited opening of the mouth. Less obvious
symptoms may be headaches, pain in the neck and shoulders, earaches,
ringing in the ears, dizziness, and toothaches. These symptoms are
usually caused by muscle spasms that occur when the muscles that are
attached to the jaw bones are strained by an unstable bite.
A thorough dental examination is the first
step toward finding a solution. Depending on the diagnosis,
treatments may include reshaping teeth, bite guards, and muscle
relaxants.
